This is what a good friend said to me recently. “What do you mean by crispy?” I asked. “I feel like my walk with God has gotten dry. What do you suggest I do to get my fire back?” Without thinking, I said, “sing in the spirit more.” He looked at me puzzled. “That’s it?” he said. “Yep. It can be that simple”.
So often we’re looking for 3 magical steps or some profound work to do. But in the end, it’s actually quite simple to keep your walk with God on fire.
Ephesians 5:17-21 says it all.
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
Verse 18 tells us to be filled with the spirit. When you study this in the Greek, it actually means, “be being filled” with the Spirit. In other words, we all need fresh refilling’s. This scripture actually outlines four simple things we can do to stay on fire for God:
- Speaking to one another psalms and hymns and spiritual songs
- Singing and making melody your heart to the Lord
- Giving thanks always for all things
- Submitting to one another
Speaking to one another psalms and hymns and spiritual songs-
Read the psalms and speak them out loud. When you begin to say things like “Bless the Lord oh my soul an all that’s within me…I will bless His holy name (psalm 103) or “the Lord is my Shepard I shall not want (psalm 23 ), or “Let the Lord be magnified, Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant (psalm 35)….you will feel faith rising in your heart. Any time we speak Gods word out of our mouth, faith will rise in our hearts.
Singing and making a melody in your heart –
Sing to yourself…its ok. Sing spiritual words back to God in your prayer language. You can do this all day long. It’s amazing. You will experience the refreshing Jude spoke of.
Giving thanks always for all things –
Look for thing s to be thankful about on purpose. Look for them. They’re all around us. We’re not saying be thankful for the difficulties in your life. Rather, be thankful through the difficulty. Its God’s promise for us to walk through the storm, not be defeated by them.
Submitting to one another –
This is such a picture of our love walk in action. We have to be around people of like faith. There is no getting around it. Were not always going to agree with everyone. Were not always going to like everyone. But we can love everyone the same way Jesus loves us. Everyone is special to God. We should treat each other with that same reverence.
We don’t have to be crispy in our walk with God. Let’s practice these 4 simple things daily and watch your walk with God soar to new heights today.
